Weeping Red Jade Crab Apple: Update
My 'Red Jade' did bloom, but no where near the previous two years bloom. I think it had something to do with the protracted cold and then the sudden jump into hot temperatures. It seemed that the blooms were in protected locations, giving me the idea that the buds may have froze. My apple tree 'Honeycrisp' also seemed to have a similar outcome, developing buds on only the protected south side of my tree. The genus Malus can take temperatures below freezing, but when those temperatures come during crucial stages of bud development, those temperatures can be devastating to the season's crop.
