I've gone . I've seen. I don't think I have ever seen a flock of any birds numbering in a possible 3,000 to 4,000.
Decidedly worth seeing. They were sitting on a cornfield as you enter the village of Shiocton, WI. Now the water on the river there is still ice-covered. It was cloudy, and overcast. There were pockets of water in the corn rows and probably corn kernels to glean, given the way the corn had been harvested. I think if the water was open and the sun shining, this would have been quite the show.
I don't think they migrate through here every year, possibly a reward for our very cold, long winter. After all, these birds summer in the Arctic. This lay-over is maybe two weeks at best.
When they feed and take-off and land their calls supposedly can be heard for miles. Today was quiet, in retrospect.
